Help Israel from Here

We can help our brothers in Israel from Norfolk at these trying times:

Stop the Sirens

1. UJFT’s Humanitarian Relief Fund for Israel

2. Shmira Project. Shmira (pronounced shmērah), means guarding or protecting. In modern Hebrew, shmira also means guard duty. The Shmira Project is an ongoing, grassroots program that pairs IDF combat soldiers with Jews around the world who do acts of kindness, prayer, or Torah learning to increase the soldier’s spiritual merit and protection.  For more information, or to sign up, please go to the project’s website at http://www.shmiraproject.com/en-us/home.aspx.

3. Tzitzis for the Troops. Many of the IDF troops stationed outside Gaza have come to IDF Rabbis with requests for tzitzis as they prepare for a possible ground operation. The military is getting more requests than they can handle and one of the rabbis has asked us for support. $8 pays for one pair of Army issue tzitzis. Please contact Rabbi Haber to be a part of this great mitzvah.
Thanks to your generous support, our community has facilitated distribution of over sixty pairs of army-issue tzitzis to troops who requested them. Please see Tzitzis for Soldiers from Army Rabbi Yedidya Atlas. You can learn more about this and similar initiatives at http://www.afidfr.org.

Rabbi Haber’s Statement on the Murder of Muhmad Abu-Khenin

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of Muhmad Abu-Khenin in Jerusalem last week, it appears that several religious Jews have been detained as suspects.

To avoid even the slightest confusion, we join in the clear and painfully obvious statement of Jews around the world: Murder is wrong and the perpetrators will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.

Our sages teach us that “There are three characteristics which distinguish the Jewish People — they are merciful, they are bashful and they are performers of acts of kindness.” (Babylonian Talmud, Yevamos, 79b)

We echo the words of Prime Minister Netanyahu in his conversation with the father of the murdered teen this morning:

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “I would like to express my outrage and that of the citizens of Israel over the reprehensible murder of your son. We acted immediately to apprehend the murderers. We will bring them to trial and they will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. We denounce all brutal behavior; the murder of your son is abhorrent and cannot be countenanced by any human being.”

In the hope that we can share only better news in the future,

S Haber
